A Traditional Journey to Kingship: Oba Ademola Stephen Kayode Makinde’s Seclusion (Ipebi) Enters Crucial Phase

As the sun rose over Igbajo land, the third day of Oba Ademola Stephen Kayode Makinde’s seclusion (Ipebi) commenced, marking a pivotal moment in his journey towards kingship. The seclusion, which is scheduled to last for seven days, is a traditional rite performed by the monarch to commune with the ancestors and seek divine guidance for the kingdom.

The atmosphere around the palace remained solemn yet vibrant with the presence of the royal family, chiefs, and well-wishers who gathered to support and witness the sacred rites. Unlike the seclusion of Prince Gboyega Famoodun, which lasted for three days, Oba Makinde’s seclusion is expected to continue for a total of seven days which is the usual custom. However, it is worth noting that Prince Famoodun’s seclusion was unique in that he did not sleep at the Ipebi on any of those days, which goes against the cultural tradition of Igbajo land.

On this third day, the atmosphere around the Ipebi continued with a profound sense of spiritual presence, as the monarch continued his prayers and meditation. Members of the community, as well as dignitaries from far and wide, continued to visit the Ipebi to pay their respects to the monarch and seek his blessings.

The seclusion of Oba Makinde has drawn significant attention due to its duration and the importance of the monarch in the traditional hierarchy of Igbajo land.

As the seclusion progresses, the people of Igbajo eagerly await the conclusion of this sacred ritual, which will culminate in Oba Makinde’s emergence as the custodian of their traditions and the embodiment of their collective identity.
