A cargo aircraft belonging to Allied Air was involved in an emergency landing at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, on Wednesday, following a malfunction of one of its landing gears.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counterterrorism and insurgency expert focused on the Lake Chad Basin, the aircraft was carrying a crew of six at the time of the incident. Makama reported that, fortunately, no casualties occurred during the crash-landing, as the crew members were safely evacuated from the aircraft immediately after the incident.
The crew members are currently receiving medical assessments at the 063 Nigerian Air Force (NAF) medical unit to ensure their well-being. Emergency responders acted quickly to secure the crash site, cordoning off the area with the assistance of the Military Airport Commandant (MAC) and other relevant agencies.
As a result of the incident, the airport’s runway was temporarily closed, leading to significant delays for both incoming and outgoing flights. Passengers and airlines are being advised to expect ongoing disruptions until the situation is resolved.
Authorities, including airport officials and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), are working diligently to remove the disabled aircraft from the runway and to inspect the area for any potential damage. Efforts are also underway to restore normal operations at the airport as swiftly as possible.
Makama indicated that further updates would be provided as investigations into the cause of the incident continue.
