The House of Representatives, led by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, has officially confirmed Major General Olufemi Oluyede as the Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
The decision was made after the joint committee on Army and Defence, chaired by Babajimi Benson, presented a report endorsing his appointment following a thorough screening process.
Oluyede had been serving as the Acting Chief of Army Staff, a position he assumed after the illness and subsequent passing of his predecessor, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja. President Bola Tinubu formally nominated him for the substantive role, submitting a request to the House of Representatives that was read by Speaker Abbas during Tuesday’s plenary session.
The screening process, conducted on Wednesday, provided an opportunity for Oluyede to present his plans and strategies for leading the Nigerian Army. During his appearance before the joint committee, he outlined his vision for addressing the country’s security challenges, which include insurgency, banditry, and other forms of violence. He also emphasized his commitment to modernizing military operations and improving the welfare of soldiers to enhance morale and operational efficiency. After careful deliberation, the committee recommended his confirmation, highlighting his qualifications and extensive experience as key factors.
President Tinubu’s nomination of Oluyede reflects a deliberate effort to appoint capable and experienced leadership at the helm of the Nigerian Army, particularly at a time when the country faces significant security challenges. Oluyede’s extensive military career and proven track record in handling complex security operations made him a strong candidate for the role. His confirmation by the House of Representatives signals broad support for his leadership abilities and the critical role he is expected to play in strengthening Nigeria’s defense framework.
However, the bill found strong support among other senators, including Senator Seriake Dickson and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, who championed the proposed reforms. Senate President Godswill Akpabio ruled in favor of the lawmakers supporting the bills, allowing the passage to proceed.
In a bid to address the concerns raised and ensure a thorough examination of the proposed reforms, the Senate has directed its Finance Committee to hold a public hearing. The hearing will provide an opportunity for various stakeholders, including the Governors’ Forum, the National Economic Council (NEC), the Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), and other opposition groups, to share their perspectives and offer feedback on the bill. The Finance Committee has been tasked with reporting back to the Senate within six weeks, ensuring that all concerns are considered before the final implementation of the tax reforms.
The passage of the Tax Reform Bills marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to modernize Nigeria’s tax system. However, the ongoing discussions and consultations will play a crucial role in shaping the final outcome of the reforms, ensuring they align with the needs and interests of all parties involved.
