Osun Governor Orders Prerogative of Mercy for Man Sentenced to Death for Stealing Fowl
Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has intervened in the case of Segun Olowookere, an indigene who was sentenced to death for stealing a fowl.
The governor has ordered an immediate investigation and the initiation of a prerogative of mercy process for Segun, in response to public outrage following a tearful account of the case shared by Segun’s mother, Folashade Olowookere, on Nollywood actress Biola Adebayo’s YouTube podcast.
The video, which attracted widespread attention from Nigerians, including Governor Adeleke, prompted a swift response from the state leadership. In a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Governor Adeleke emphasized the urgency with which the matter is being addressed.
“I assure the public that this matter is receiving my direct attention. A sense of urgency is attached to our response as a responsible state government,” said Governor Adeleke.
The statement further outlined that the Governor has instructed the Attorney General to ensure Segun’s case is placed before the relevant authorities for consideration of the prerogative of mercy before the end of the year.
“I have directed the Commissioner for Justice to initiate processes to grant prerogative of mercy to the young man,” the Governor added. “Osun is a land of justice and equity. We must ensure fairness and protect the sanctity of life.”
This intervention underscores the state’s commitment to justice, equity, and the humane treatment of individuals, regardless of the nature of their crimes.
