Osun Women Commissioner Joins Global Push for Gender Equality at UN High-Level Event
The Osun State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Ayobola Elizabeth Fadeyi Awolowo, joined global leaders on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at the 69th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) in New York, reinforcing Osun’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment.
The high-level event, themed Beijing +30: Strategic Joint Event for Gender Equality & Women’s Empowerment, was held at the Diplomat Hall, United Nations Headquarters, and provided a platform for key discussions on advancing women’s rights in Nigeria and beyond.
Representing Osun, Hon. Ayo Awolowo actively engaged in deliberations with UN Women and other global stakeholders. She highlighted Osun’s strides in promoting women’s empowerment through policy reforms, skill development programs, and economic opportunities aimed at bridging gender gaps in leadership and economic participation.
During the event, the Honourable Commissioner emphasised Osun’s dedication to accelerating gender equality through strategic partnerships and collaboration. She showcased the state’s initiatives, including support for women entrepreneurs, education for the girl child, and protection mechanisms against gender-based violence. Her participation underscored Osun’s role as a model for subnational commitment to women’s advancement.
Accompanying the Commissioner was Barr. Abimbola Babatunde, Permanent Secretary, Osun State Ministry of Women Affairs, Children, and Social Welfare, who also contributed to discussions on strengthening policies and programs for women’s empowerment at the state level. She reiterated Osun’s commitment to fostering inclusive development through gender-responsive governance.
Hon. Ayo Awolowo, along side the Minister of Women Affairs, Hon. Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim and Lagos and Ogun Women Commissioners, Hon. Bolaji Dada and Hon. Motunrayo Adijat Adeleye, reinforced Nigeria’s broader commitment to international frameworks like the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Beijing Declaration.
They called for increased global support and investment in grassroots women-focused programs.
